moderator of "meet the press" david gregory joins me now. as we've said, david, you sat down with president obama this afternoon for an exclusive interview that airs tomorrow morning, but give us a hint. is he optimistic? do you come away with any hope that we're going to have a deal before the deadline? >> i'd say a couple things. i think the president continues to be optimistic, but he, i think, in part is doing the interview on "meet the press" because he wants to keep the pressure on republicans to get something done and made very clear in the course of the interview that there is a political cost to be paid if there is not a deal, a cost that i think he believes will be paid mostly by republicans if they don't get something done. he's gone out of his way to really cast his argument as one of protecting the middle class and that the middle class, 98% of americans don't want to see their taxes go up. if there is a failure to act. that said, the president did not strike me as overly worried about going over the cliff. both confident that they'll get a deal done and if not even t

that president obama was going go down as a jimmy carterresque figure, one kicke term kicked . he has four more years now. the possibility that the economy will turn around and he will be able to go down as a successful president. i also think and this is a big reason why time made him our person of the year, he had a very interesting diverse winning coalition. a lot of people say it was kind of the new face of america. a large minority nonwhite vote. young voter to a more liberal than older vote hers. i think you can see the changing face of america there. that would be the number one story. right behind and related to it is chief justice john roberts guiding the supreme court to a decision that upheld the healthcare law. finding a compromise solution where he said that the individual mandate might not be constitutional but that the law could be justified as a tax. he find this kind of surprising unexpected solution. a lot of people said it showed him to be a deft politician who was able to hold the court together and find a majority opinion that i think played a big role in the pres

start in washington where it's down to the wire in the fiscal cliffhanger. three days left for the president and congress to make a deal and avoid those automatic tax hikes and spending cuts. obama met with top leaders from the both sides of the aisle in a rare meeting that lasted over an hour. afterward, he spoke about the importance of the deal for the u.s.'s still recovering economy. >> economists, business leaders, all think we're poised to grow in 2013. as long as politics in washington don't get in the way of america's progress. so we've got to get this done. >> senate minority leader mitch mcconnell also spoke after their meeting expressing home that the weekend would bring a deal. >> we are engaged in discussions, the majority leader and myself and the white house in the hopes that we can come forward as early as sunday and have a recommendation i can make to my conference and the majority leader can make to his conference. and we'll be working hard to try to see if we can get there in the next 24 hours. i'm hopeful and optimistic. >> we're watching that story closely. >>>
